 Where Are All the Jobs?

Verizon has been boasting to investors that it’s cut the wireline force by 7% in just two years.

The jobs are disappearing, but the work isn’t.

How does Verizon pull off this magic trick? By undermining our employment security.

We’ve negotiated strong employment security language, but Verizon takes every opportunity to sidestep and circumvent it.

A few of their tricks:                                                                     
  • Excessive use of contractors in all areas including plant work, tech support, building maintenance and commercial;       
  • Offering IPP to get union workers off the payroll and then filling in with contractors;Moving work out of the country;
  • Moving work to non-union and lower-tier VZW and VZB-while fighting unionization there.
What’s Up Our Sleeve?

We need a few tricks of our own. We’re grieving contract violations, of course, but that isn’t enough. Verizon drags out cases for years and keeps looking for loopholes. In this round of bargaining, we need to win a real commitment from the company to honor the employment security language it’s agreed to.
